The Huon Peninsula is located in the east of the island of New Guinea, in Morobe Province. The peninsula is dominated by rugged mountain ranges covered in rainforests. Its dramatic landscape and cool montane forest hosts some rarely seen Birds of Paradise making it a birders’ haven.
Birdwatching tours are concentrated on the Saruwaged Mountain Range, a part of the world where its birds are so poorly studied. Sites are accessed by 4WD vehicles reaching up to 2000m above sea level.
Highlights of the Huon Peninsula include the Huon Astrapia, Wahnes’ Parotia, Emperor Bird of Paradise, Spangled Honeyeater, Huon Catbird, Houn Bowerbird, Mottled Berryhunter or Whistler, Pesquet’s (Vulturine) Parrot, Tit and Fan-tailed Berrypecker, gaudy Papuan Lorikeet, Papuan Sitella, Blue-capped Ifrit, Superb Bird of Paradise and the Papuan Eagle.
New to 2019 is the creation of the Huon Birding Camp, located at 1800m right in the heart of the birding sites. A safari style camp created by birders for birders.
This region is sure to satisfy listers of both rare and remote species and families alike.
