Huon Flights

Nadzab Airport in Lae is the main commercial airline hub to access the Huon Peninsula.  Your trip will begin in Lae, with a 30-40 minute flight from Lae (Nadzab Airport) to the Huon Birding Camp.

The aircraft used for this flight has limited seating and a restriction on weight.  Therefore, group sizes are limited to 9 passengers and individual baggage allowance is also limited.  Any excess baggage can be left behind securely in storage at the airline's office or loaded on the aircraft at the applicable excess baggage charge.

Flights from Lae to the Huon Peninsula (and return) are often dependent on weather conditions.  Huon Birding recommends that all groups overnight in Lae pre-and-post your Huon Peninsula Tour.  This can be arranged by Huon Birding.

Accommodation & Amenities

Accommodation in the Huon Peninsula is at the newly created Huon Birding Camp located at 1800m in the Saruwaged Range.  The camp is basic but comfortable, complete with drop toilets and hot water shower!  Guests must bring their own sleeping bag.

There is also a small generator for power supply to the camp site.

Meals

All meals in the Huon Peninsula will be catered for by Huon Birding Camp.  As this is a very remote area, meals are very basic.  Dietary requirements should be advised well in advance, and may not always be met.

All meals are served at the camp site.

Birding

Huon Birding uses local vehicles to transport guests from the accommodation to the birding sites daily.  Birding is relatively easy in the area, with vehicle access along coronous roads, taking you up to 2000 metres above sea level.  Some easy to moderate walking is also involved.

Huon Birding handles all the local logistics and has arrangements with local landowners for access to key birding areas.

Easy birding along the road.
Cheyne Benjamin - Huon Birding
